Golf Courses – What Makes A Good One?

Golf courses have greatly evolved since the game was developed 400 years ago. It’s arguable how golf got its start but it’s generally accepted that bored sheepherders used their canes to hit rocks into holes in the ground. Today there is a great deal and planning and upkeep on a golf course. So what makes a good golf course and why are some superior over others? Here are some things that planners think about when designing a course and some things you should look for when choosing a golf course to play on.

A good golf course will need to have hills, trees surrounding the fairway, ponds and sand traps (which some contest shouldn’t exist). There should also be ample space for a fairway and a surrounding area for rough. Every hole must be designed so it is different from the last to keep golfers’ interest and make the course challenging. Some holes should dogleg left and others dogleg right so there is variety.

Tee boxes should be well elevated so you can get enough loft on your drives. Also, to keep it challenging there should be enough obstacles so you can’t see the flag from the tee box. After you get your ball onto the fairway then getting your ball to the desired elevation is up to you and your skill level.

The type of grass on the green is also important. Bermuda grass is a good green cover but may not sufficiently slow your ball down once it hits the green. Bent grass on the greens is generally preferred since it will keep you ball from rolling off the green though it is more susceptible to divots since the ground tends to be softer.

The upkeep of the golf course is also very important. Most courses employ groundskeepers who ensure the fairways are smooth and the greens are closely cropped. Golf cart paths should be well maintained and clear of debris. Even a small amount of slack in upkeep will show and may result in a disappointing game.

The attitude of the employees at the clubhouse or on the grounds can make or break the reputation of the golf course. If they have bad attitudes then that can translate into poor service and it can rub off onto the players. People who are treated poorly will remember and the course will loose its loyal customers. On the other hand, a friendly and helpful staff will make for a pleasant experience and ensure recommendations.

Playing golf on a well planned and well maintained course makes all the difference.
